[GREEN]Tuesday: Seward Co-op rewards members for biking to the store.

May 24, 2011 - 3:36pm

Members of the Seward Co-op are now getting an added incentive for biking to the co-op instead of driving. Their new Zap program tracks each bike ride that members make to the co-op, and if you bike at least once a month, you're entered to win a $100 co-op gift certificate. And if you sign up in May you could also win a free Nice Ride subscription. Oh, and the whole thing's free. How cool does that sound?

So how does it work? A solar powered station in the parking lot of the co-op tracks a tag that's installed on your bike, so every time you pass by the station, it records a trip on your member account. You can even log on to www.derozap.com to see how many gallons of gas you've saved and how many calories you've burned.

Dero-Zap also has a similar program set up for University of Minnesota faculty and students. Where else would you like to see bike-riding incentive programs? Leave us a comment on Facebook or Twitter.
